The Martin surname comes originally from Mars, the Roman God of War and Fertility. Martin of Tours was a highly venerated Saint in Normandy in the 4th century. The Christian name 'Martin' enjoyed great popularity in Europe and was in use in Scotland by the 12th century. It's use as a surname grew rapidly and it has become one of the 50 commonest surnames in the United Kingdom. Saint Martin was revered by the Gaels, and the name Mac Gille Mhartainn (son of the devotee of Saint Martin) came into use. The Clan MacMartin of Letterfinlay held lands in Lochaber that passed by marriage to the Camerons. The Martins came under the protection of the Camerons, followed their banner, and probably adopted their surname in many cases. |
